Don’t worry, I haven’t fallen off the face of the planet. Although, I have moved to London. So technically have fallen from a small planet to a new solar system…anyway…

Truth is, I haven’t been too busy to blog; I just had no way of putting everything that’s happened into blog form. Instead, I’m going to post a few facebook updates and photos from the fancy new timeline I have. They might be cryptic, this is part of the fun.

When I wrote at the beginning of August “I absolutely bloody love Piff’s show and really can’t recommend it enough!” I had no idea that four days later, I’d be in the show, stage managing and having daily battles of hierarchy with a small levitating chiauaua! As a result, I had quite possibly my most challenging Edinburgh ever!

The first day I joined Piff’s show, our audience members included Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman. Yeah, two of my heroes in one handily packaged married couple. In the show, two hours after I’d agreed to do it. And part of my role was to be mean to Amanda Fucking Palmer. Good times!

THEN a few days later, I got invited to a private party with the Gaimens. Then Neil messaged me happy birthday! On my birthday, otherwise that would have been weird…

26th August 2011

Really enjoyed today, performed at Best of The Fest this afternoon, met Al Murrary, double Piffed it up & watched a magic dragon make a small boy cry, was insulted by Richard Wiseman (kinda deservedly), said hallo to by Robin Ince then played with cabaret monkeys till 5am. Ah…

27th August 2011

85 shows, 48 razorblades swallowed, 31 apples eaten, 31 newspapers whipped, 30 levitated chiuauas, 21 Chinese Poles rigged, 17 bruises & 1 #edfringe 2011 DONE! Home now please…

September brought a few extra Piff-on-tour dates, October, Edd went to Dubai and I moved to London for a few weeks to test the water. Renting a room from one of the Tiger Lillies was a magnificent experience and I can’t thank Adrian, Roxy and Nigel enough for being so welcoming.

Plenty of London based cake & pancake experiments later, it was time to go back to Newcastle for some playwriting fun times, an Edd and in January some very terrifying auditions.

February has begun with filming a tv pilot with Micky Flanaghan, meeting some of my favourite magicians, moving into another awesome cabaret flat in London and sadly getting mugged last week. Yeah, it sucks but I’m not too badly hurt and pfft! London has way too much awesome for me to be put off by some shitty little toerag… hell yeah!

I’m guest blogging and co-producing content for BURLEXE over the next few weeks so keep your eyes peeled, gigging at the BRILLIANT Bete Noire on Thursday and then off to Germany with the gorgeous Evening of Burlesque beauties. I’m especially looking forward to the muthfunkin crafts with Audacity Chuztpah!

Edfringe – Settling In

First days of shows are done. I’ve cooked in the flat twice (Score!), I’ve walked (well; sprinted in heels) between The Voodoo Rooms & The Pleasance enough times to ensure I will not be joining the gym this season. I will not feel guilty about it.

Last night, I also broke my promise not to drink until Saturday. Damn. My headache is making me guilty about this.

I will try to explain my downfall. At the start there’s all these launch parties for things. You go, because you should and it promises to be fun, you hover about whilst your eyelashes try to pull your face to the ground and then you jump on stage to show your act. Everyone’s far too drunk to actually appreciate it and you just know the people who you really want to see your act are actually at the bar. Where you should be. Drinking with your free tokens.

So then, you think ‘okay – I shall go a schmoozing…that is the purpose of these events’ Except I’m really rubbish (no I really am, if you meet me at an event and think I’m ignoring you, I’m not I’m just rabbit::headlights. Badtimes) and yet again I’ve ended up in the dressing room. Talking about how rollerderby works, who the stunt woman from Death Proof is, why can no-one  remember her name and ultimately WHY the hell do I have a smaller drink than everyone else?

Doing the type of act that Edd and I do (danger, acrobatics, freakshow, death in general you get the picture) we CAN’T drink until our act is over. This means, we have drink tokens that simply must be used in the half hour between getting off stage and the bar closing. As the well-meaning Cherry Loco pointed out to me, just because the tokens exist doesnt in fact mean I had to drink them. I disagree. It would have been impolite. Also, I got drunk & I started schmoozing – mission accomplished!

Got some wicked feedback about our act, sadly some of that was trying to find out where I got my dress (vintage dahling from Venice Beach, CA … no you can’t try it on, yes it’s viscose please step away with your drunken self & your cigarette) but mainly ace.

In other, non-drink related news, we’ve had the wonderous Correspondants move into our flat, making the comparison to my student flat of 2002 completely moot as this time we’ve a flat full of amazing musicians. Not shit indie bands. Edd keeps on trying to talk to them about dubstep. It really is a show in itself.

Tonight I GET TO SEE A SHOW! Going to catch the superb Frisky & Mannish before they sell out, that is after I’ve swallowed some more razorblades at Voodoo Revue.

Yum… that’s going to go perfectly well with this hangover, tasty tasty tangy metal.

Bork.

EdFringe – Day Two -Previews

When is a preview not a preview? When it’s a cabaret show full of awesome performers who know their shit. That’s when and that’s what happened this evening.

Voodoo Revue opened at The Voodoo Rooms (Venue 68, 20:10-21:10) to a nice audience size with wicked tech and spirits high. I performed my still new Razorblade swallow routine introduced by the dastardly Des O’Connor and shared the bill with:

East End Cabaret – 9:55pm @ The Laughing Horse Free Festival, in the Ballroom at The Counting House.

Mat Ricardo – 3 Balls and  New Suit: 9:40pm @ The Voodoo Rooms

Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer 11pm @ The Voodoo Rooms

The Kitsch Kats

This was followed by a quick sprint across town to help the other half of Frayed Knot, Mister Edd Muir rig his Chinese Pole in time for Vive le Cabaret at The Pleasance. I ran, I ran so fast and oh… the previous show is running late. Oh… oh fuck we’ve how long to rig? In a venue we haven’t even seen yet? Oh…

Ahh the Fringe has officially arrived.

HOWEVER! As previously mentioned, we are cabaret performers of awesome and at 10:15pm we began our rig, threw the pole up in record time, borrowed the bums of the hot Hustle Dancers as extra ballast (yeah good luck finding a polite way to ask for ’4 heavyish dancers please’… we didn’t get any, they had to think heavy thoughts…) and were good to go by 10:28

YES! Score one for Frayed Knot Circus!

Fantastic opening night door numbers, introduced expertly by Des O’Connor and BOOM we’re off again! Edd performed with the wonderful Piff The Magic Dragon (18:40 Just The Tonic – The Store 4th-28th) fresh from his Penn &  Teller experience. I got to top up my yearly ‘see Mr Piffles the tiny tiny dog, think about getting a dog, realise we can’t waaaaaaaa!’ thoughts. I absolutely bloody love Piff’s show and really can’t recommend it enough!

Piff-tastic

I’m also now a little bit in love with Marcel Lucont (4-28 August, 9.20pm, Underbelly), France’s premier misanthropist and lover. Gorgeous, slow and measured comedy with poetry to finish. Admittidly, seeing a performance poet on the bill often sends me running to the bar but I’ll be racing across to catch his show later this week for sure. He also has a book it seems.

Tomorrow is The List Launch Party, Voodoo Revue, Vive le Cabaret and potentially something else. I’m not sure. All I’m sure of is that Starbucks has good coffee. Very very good restorative coffee.

Edinburgh Fringe – Day One – Arrivals

There’s something beautiful in the naivety of the first days of The Fringe. The plans to meet for lunch with performers you haven’t seen in a year, the promise of home cooked food in the cast flat, the agreements of sobriety ‘until previews are over’ and ultimately the determination to ‘join the gym – it’s just down the road.’ What else would you be doing with your full empty days?

Obviously, you know in your heart of luggage burdened hearts that by Friday you’ll be knee deep in gin & McDonald’s wrappers. But again, I’d like to point out – for the first day it’s a beautiful feeling. Of hope, of comradeship & ultimately utter desperate need to believe that this year; THIS YEAR you won’t be dying somewhere in a gutter, barred from the Balcony Bar by week 3.

Frayed Knot arrived on Tuesday straight from the amazing Hotrod Hayride Festival in Surrey, two days of hot cars, hot wummins and actually hot weather. I got a rather fetching red burn to the face.

We then crammed 8 acts into THIS:

Then carried this on the train to Edinburgh. Quite a light load for us I felt – the 2 person circus is getting more efficient in our tetris travel packing. Surprisingly the guard van was already half full with random Fringe prop shit and the poor train staff looked frazzled as university sketch show types stood back whilst it was emptied at Waverly- helpfully shouting ‘CAREFUL, that’s expensive & important!’ We know this to mean ‘made of sticky back plastic, last night in a hurry so please don’t break it as I don’t want to cut into my booze fund to replace it.’ Maybe I’m being unfair, perhaps it is a prop of importance. It probably isn’t.

Most of our train buddies were Fringe Virgins, excited little faces, t-shirts with ‘An Actor is nothing without his technician’ (bless!) and my personal favourite and one I used to own ‘Pyrotechnician – if you see me running; please follow me quickly.’ Despite the outward happiness, the air did smell of fear. I liked it.

We’re all settled into our actually fantastic flat, sharing with two super duper musical comedy geniuses Des O’Connor & Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer awaiting more housemates and already pondering the aforementioned healthy meals. I managed one meal of cottage cheese before giving in & ordering supper from The Holyrood (nom peri peri chicken salad nom nom) but hey I deserved it. I’d walked across Edinburgh – that’s some calorie burning right? Technically, I went to the gym.

That’s two objectives achieved right there… tomorrow we have our first shows, I’m going to sort out what I’d like to see with my shiny Pleasance Pass and get ready for the awesome. I will continue to have hope.

If you’re up here, give me a shout – we’ll meet up, do coffee, go to the gym, cook something… okay yeah fine let’s be honest; I’ll see you at the bar…

Before it gets too busy…

I don’t want a mammoth update like last time so here we go. May & June are going like this:

  • Had a week in Spain, was lovely thanks very much – it looked like this:

  • Back and hip are still pretty messed up, splits are nearly 3ft off the floor ahhhcrap!
  • I’ve started driving. I also just got full marks in my Theory Test. I’m actually a good driver. Amazed.
  • I’ve realised driving means I can’t get drunk at gigs. This was harshly discovered via a post show 8 am driving lesson.
  • I’ve done 3 photoshoots; one which was with Dani California for Reds Ribbons in which we got down with our bad selves. We’re so cool:

June is utterly packed to the brim with events from hosting to vaudeville weekends to dance festivals and more! It’s looking like this at the moment:

  • 3rd June – Headline Honeys, Middlesbrough
  • 5th June – Hosting, Barkollo for Leazes Fringe
  • 9th – 11th June – Blackpool tbc
  • 17th June – Ministry of Burlesque High Tease, Lowry, Salford
  • 18th – 19th June – MBNA Chestival Vaudeville Festival, Chester (cannot wait for this!)
  • 23rd June – The Greene Room, Milton Keynes
  • 26th June – Dr Sketchy Newcastle, Barkollo, Newcastle

Check out the poster for the Vaudeville Weekend; we did these images with Neil Kendall back in 2007 for his upcoming book release; so excited to finally see them!

Blogging Fail…

Luckily, I’ve been too busy to update! Unfortunately, I’m now updating because I’ve been injured and have to endure three weeks of enforced rest from performing. Ah booooooo.

It’s pretty interesting to realise that a herniated spinal disc and displaced hip feels exactly as you would expect it to; it’s also hugely annoying as I’d much rather be gigging than sat reading & eating ice cream. Odd I know.

SO UPDATES! Since last time I have:

Hosted & Produced the FIRST Dr Sketchy Newcastle:

It was superb fun! We filled the space we had with amazing work from the performers, Cherry Loco, Frankii Wilde, Meg La Mania, Dahlia Seymour. I’ve been wanting to return to hosting for some time now and WOW am I glad I did – what I’ve been missing from performing is right here ladies and gentlemen… look out for more hosting gigs to appear in my scheduale from now on (hear that promoters…got it? Good.)

Our gorgeous stalls; ethical geniuses and all round wonderful smelling LUSH COSMETICS specifically the Newcastle branch with the support of Jenny ‘Wooh’ and Jo. They gave demo’s of ‘Lovely Jubblies’ to enhance those all important life drawing essentials (!) and ‘Silky Stockings’ for all pin up girls. We’ll also had prizes from Lush for the audience and gifts for the models!

With a stall and providing prizes for the audience was local deliciousness CANDY HANDFULS BOUTIQUE BAKERY. High quality and ethically sourced ingredients, Candy Handfulls fits in perfectly with our greentastic sessions and can offer a mean sugar-tastic treat for all and every event. Yum!

Candy Handfuls Boutique Bakery

Especially for kookie cuties & rockin’ chicks, BUBBLEGUM VEGAS is a Newcastle based jewellery and accesories company that we’re big fans of. With a stall on the day and a special prize for the main competitions they really brought a wicked style to the space!

Dr Sketchy Newcastle are also sponsored by Baby Tattoo and Dave Dent Printers and was beautifully photographed by Miss Rain

I had a photoshoot! Voluntarily!

After taking Anna Fur Laxis’ Confidence for Camera workshop earlier this year; I’ve finally started to feel a little less like screaming in fear around camera lenses. So I’d arranged a shoot with the always optimistic Emma of Miss Rain Photography. Spending the evening drinking far too much vodka & with one Cherry of Loco probably didn’t help so it was a bit of a stumble trying to find the ability to sit still without being ill or passing out. Lesson learnt with that one I feel… really looking forward to seeing the results though!

I also did two shows in Rome and had the most marvellous time!

I genuinely can’t get over the fabulous time I had in Rome, the folks at Micca Club truly spoilt me! What a venue, what a show! I went on a huge adventure on my second day, ate my way across the city and then had an amazing show. I debuted my new tap dance version of 1,2,3,4 and the technicians had mic’ed the stage for me – audience went crazy. I was delighted to say the least. I do hope to go back!

Micca Club, Rome, Italy

My hugely exciting hotel room

The Colliseum

Trevi Fountain

I had FANTASTIC UK shows!

Lots of fun with the brilliant Salon Rouge in Cambridge where the razorblade routine went down an absolute treat. I’m still hugely unhappy with the costume but the act is now perfect and I love performing it. I caught up with the gorgeous Slinky Sparkles just before she knocked them all out in Vegas and we celebrated the show with some super odd hotel pizza & warm vino. Ahh…

I’m officially in love with Norwich.

April also included a trip to Norwich for Hocus Pocus Theatre’s No Strings Show.  With a super sweet cast, crew and adorable puppet theatre, I performed my newly updated Girl in The Jar routine. It’s a dance piece that focuses on the jar rather than any aspect of stripping, I definitely think it creates a more interesting element for the jar rather than the comedy pieces I produced in the past. Hopefully I’ll have video soon. We also caught up with the wicked fun Hocus Pocus Crew, the stunning Billie Rae and the outstanding Anna Fur Laxis just before she launches herself upon the unsuspecting audiences in Las Vegas. I’m sensing a theme here.

I had my hair did by the bloomin MARVELLOUS Flamingo Amy which made me feel super special and hugely happy. Three days later I undid the weave and found 58 hair pins – got to be a record! Amy is available across the Norfolk area and beyond for vintage hairstyling & events – I was in shock to have amazing hair for a change!

We were also lucky enough to be shown around Hocus Pocus’ new studios! We really hope to work with them more in the future!

Hosted another North East Cabaret Collective Meeting!

This was a follow on to January’s event, we had A LOT of returning members and a few new faces. Issues discussed ranged from the glass ceiling of burlesque to where to source costuming in the N.E. I’m really hugely pleased with the community spirit that is being developed and look forward to arranging workshops to benefit our members throughout 2011.

What’s next?

Well, I’m attempting to get better that’s what. I’m going to start driving lessons finally, I’m shooting with Tip Top Photography for the beauteous Red Sarah’s Red Ribbons Fascinators and generally do all the stuff I haven’t been able to approach since 2010.

Red Sarah has also created these really interesting interchangeable pasties for burlesque, what I’m commonly calling ‘The Boobie Saver’s Check them out!

With May shows cancelled, I’m a little bored but June is fit to burst with activity with a slowly filling up July too. I’ve some holiday time in Spain booked for the end of this month but sadly patience isn’t in my skills list – all distractions and pictures of dogs skating on turtles can be sent via the usual methods…

Mammoth update end.

It’s here. It’s happening. It’s Dr Sketchy Newcastle…
Spread the word…

I’m aware, I’ve been a little quiet of late. 2011 has finally kicked in for me with a flurry of gigs ranging from Dr Sketchy events in Glasgow, aerial hoop workshops, munching on razorblades in Sheffield and more.

Since the success of the last North East Cabaret & Variety Meeting, Frayed Knot have decided to continue it as a project. We’ll be announcing a date in March very soon.

Life is far from boring but not really worth blogging about – I’ve been keeping a visual diary of stuff & madness on my tumblr account – go take a peek!

::Meg La Mania, Betty D’Light and Lola Rainbows at The 1st North East Cabaret & Burlesque Meeting::

Since working within such a wonderfully creative place at The Fifth Floor; I’ve been really into the idea of cross-company collaborations with other artists within the region. Frayed Knot used to work a lot with Growling Clown but logistics have prevented this recently and I miss bashing ideas out in a safe fun environment. I also have some amazing workshop & development contacts that I want to bring into the region & share!

I’d noticed a proliferation of regional societies and meetings popping up and really it seemed natural to suggest a northern event. With being out of the region most of the year, for FK I knew this would be quite a difficult thing to propose but thought ‘sod it, book it do it what’s the worst that can happen?’

Fantastically, the delightfully vicious Vendetta Vain was due to stay with me and Edd in the last weekend of January. Made sense to book it for then and woohoo North West Society maven Glorian Gray was also in the region. This looked like it was shaping into a plan and I’m very very glad for it.

January 23rd came, Facebook told me I had 32 attending – 21 turned up. Cakes had been made, everyone was very kind about me and V’s seville marmalade effort and I managed to get enough tea & coffee on the go for a 2:15 start.

Whilst the majority of attendees were from the burlesque community, we did reach some singers, variety performers, drag artists and magicians. We also brought attracted newbies which was brilliant – how great would that be to start in the region by being put in a room with everyone who wants to be awesome together??!

Great meeting, brilliant chat and some fantastic debate on paying to perform, the cost of performing & ideas to go forwrd. I’ll be making the whole minutes available on facebook AND releasing another date for around 6 weeks away as soon as I’ve got a new page together for it. Right now I’m focusing on some FK work & exciting events so priority has to go there for now.

In other news, we’ve had a pile of bookings come in this week; like to announce we’ll be also performing at

12th February
Velvet Burlesque Sheffield

19th March
Salon Rouge Cambridge

New Work Underway

Following the explosion of ideas and creativity after the North East Cabaret & Burlesque meeting; I’ve flung myself into my new act. It’s an idea I’ve been playing with for some time but wanted to ensure I had the correct skills & time in which to do it justice. January seems to be a good time for this.

I’ve been aware for some time now that maybe I’m not producing the type of act that challenges me enough creatively. I utterly adore the dramatic, epic and theatrical pieces in my repetoire but I miss the clowning & characterwork of my circus background. This year, I want to focus on an act that will push me both in performance, costuming & choreography. Now that my act consultation workshops are really taking off, I know my attention to detail in other performer’s act must now be focused on my own too.

I don’t know where this act is going yet but simply put it’s a 1930′s roller skating effort act.

I’ve been researching authentic variety skating acts as inspiration including the wonderous Myra & Eileen, double spin geniuses The Lucerne Skaters amongst modern jam skaters. Since the average stage I’ll be performing on will be quite small & possibly carpet, I’ve been looking for tricks that are more about foot movement rather than speed or jumps. I’m rehearsing tap dancing on my quads today and tomorrow – it’s hell on my  calves!

My acrobatic coach once said that to be the best clown in the world, you must be the best acrobat in the world. Certainly this is on my mind during training; repeating the same tricks again and again so that when I go to alter them for comedy it won’t just look like I can’t do the trick. Slow rolling into the splits is obviously a great gag but I have to learnt to do it safely or one snapped muscle later I won’t be performing for long…

I’ve wanted to experiement with effort acts for ages; primarily the term means ‘an act where the final goal is of percieved slapstick difficulty to the performer.’ Chaplin is a great example of this and I did explore the idea of riffing on his amazing tightwire routine.

Don’t be fooled; the safety wire is of course there but now known as a ‘lunge’ it’s a requisite for all highwire artists. Chaplin’s technique on the wire is superb, his body tension and core strength whilst moving hide hours and hours of training. I still wish I could do something with a homage to this routine but lugging a tightwire around venues is just horrendously hard. I very much miss wire dancing.

Back to this act, my costume inspiration is looking like purple and gold or gold and black. Satin for the most part and heavily influenced by 1930′s ice skating ‘fashion changer’ Sonja Henie. The design of short skater dresses comes mainly from Henie’s insistence on a better costume to present her line & flexibility. I’m looking forward to drawing up a pattern for a satin circle skirt as soon as I’ve decided on the damn colour scheme!!

So! The act will play between the idea of everything going a bit wrong. It’s hardly ‘Starlight Express gone 30′s’ but I’m hugely enjoying the making process.

Music; well music is a different matter. I can’t decide if I want something fast/slow or a piece that edits into another piece. I know this act has to be a long one, at least 6minutes in order to get across the idea & skills but I don’t want to hack music together simply because it fits. In a very different ‘making’ process for me, this act idea didn’t come from a piece of music! I’d been playing roller derby for most of 2010 until I realised I don’t enjoy the game myself – I really loved the skating!

I’ll be looking for venues & dates to play with this new routine in a few months so keep an eye out!
